Health Benefits of Meditation

In this modern and fast-paced life, many people seek to find peace of mind, calmness and joy amidst their stressful life. These are hard to find and many people have sought and failed. However, there are also some who have successfully gained them through meditation. Meditation is a practice whereby a person indulges in deep concentration over an object, breathing movement or visualization. To many people who have already tried the practice of meditation, they can attest to its many benefits:

1. Helps in stress management.

Among the top benefits of meditation is that it helps a person prevent stress and also helps release stress out of the body. When meditating, the main goal is to focus one’s attention on the things that are currently happening. Doing so can help you relax and release stress because you don’t have to think or worry about other things. With that, it allows a person to enjoy peace of mind and a calmness of spirit.

2. Helps improve physical health.

Meditation also proves to have several health benefits. It helps lower blood pressure as the body becomes less responsive to stress hormones. It also boosts the immune system and helps a person lower its risk of tension-related pain and illnesses such as headache, insomnia, ulcer, muscle and joint pain and migraine among others. People who are suffering from anxiety problems can also benefit from meditation as it helps lower the level of lactate in the blood, which is one of the triggering factors of anxiety attacks. Additionally, it can also help increase the level of serotonin production, which in turn helps a person have a better mood and behavior.

Moreover, a study conducted at the State University in New York found out that patients with irritable bowel syndrome can benefit from meditation. Through meditating twice a day, they are able to decrease their symptoms of diarrhea, bloating and constipation.

3. Helps improve mental health.

People who practice meditation generally achieve inner peace, clarity of mind and happiness by eliminating stress in their life. They are also more likely to achieve emotional stability as they are able to decrease anger, frustration and tension in their system. With meditation, you will be more aware that inner happiness is all about inner attitude.

4. Makes a person emotionally balanced.

Emotional balance means to be free from all the neurotic behaviors that result from the existence of a tortured and traumatized ego. This is very hard to achieve fully, but meditation certainly is the way to cure such neurosis and unhealthy emotional states. As one’s consciousness is cleansed of emotionally soaked memories, not only does great freedom abound but so does great balance since one’s response is not colored by the burdens that he carries, but are instead, true, direct and appropriate.

5. Promotes personal transformation.

Another unique benefit of meditation is that it aids in personal transformation. In meditation, you would be spending a lot of time with yourself, away from the stresses and influences of other people. You would also be at one with yourself and that would also be the best time to learn more about yourself. You would also be able to meditate on your relationships with other people and realize your true purpose on why you are here. These kinds of realization are important for personal transformation or changing oneself for the better.

Even if you are a busy person, you can still enjoy the benefits of meditation. Take a few minutes each day to meditate. You could do it in your room or in any private space. It is something that you can do for free and the benefits in your life will be enormous.

What is Reiki

In our modern age, many suffer from physical, mental and emotional illness as a result of the kind of life we are living. While some of these illnesses can be treated with medical intervention, some need more than that. And that is when people start to find alternative healing. One of them is Reiki.

Reiki is a form of energy healing that seeks to transmit the Universal Life Energy to a person. It is a simple, safe and natural treatment method that is also associated to self-improvement and spiritual healing. Anybody can try Reiki. It can be effective in treating any known illnesses and it can also work in conjunction with other therapeutic or medical techniques to relieve symptom and promote fast recovery.

The term Reiki is from a Japanese words “rei” which means universal and “ki” which means essential life force energy that naturally flows in all living things. This life force energy is believed to be spiritual in nature and is limitless. It also stands on its own and is not connected with any specific nationality or religion.

There are many versions as to the origin of Reiki. According to the popular version, Dr. Mikao Usui who was a Japanese spiritual truth seeker introduced the Reiki method in 1922 after achieving a deep spiritual experience. After that time, he began teaching others about this method as he felt that there was a need to spread the knowledge. While it is spiritual in nature, Reiki recognizes no religion. It also has no dogma. A person is not required to believe in something to learn or use it.

How Reiki Works

Reiki is normally done by a practitioner who is considered as a conduit between the universal life force energy source and you. The energy from the universal source is believed to flow through the energy field of the practitioner, into his or her hands and then to you. While the usual practice is done by the laying on of hands, it can also be done by long distance or when the patient is not around, as a form of prayer. Since the energy source is universal, a person practicing Reiki will not be drained in energy regardless of how many sessions he or she does in a day.

The energy may be felt as a tingling sensation, heat or pulsing feeling whenever the practitioner places his hands in a particular part of your body. Some people may also feel these different sensations moving through the body as the Reiki session is going on, while others may not feel anything at all. But the entire session can be very relaxing and peaceful. Many clients normally fall asleep while undergoing Reiki.

Benefits of Reiki

It is said that when a person’s life force energy is low, it will cause sickness and stress. On the other hand, if the life force energy is high, it will result to health and happiness.

Reiki method is one way to get your life force energy high with main benefits that include deep relaxation, speedy healing, reducing pain and decreasing other symptoms a patient may be experiencing. It also promotes security, peace and wellbeing. It is a form of treatment that heals a person in the physical, emotional and spiritual sense.

Who is Qualified to Practice Reiki

Reiki is not dependent on a person’s spiritual development or intellectual ability, and therefore, anybody can learn it. Many people of all ages from various backgrounds are already practicing this method. However, there is no government regulation as to its practice in most places, so it is the responsibility of the patient to investigate first if a practitioner is really qualified to perform Reiki.

Brace Yourself

Since Jeff was in middle school, I noticed that he has lots of crooked teeth and I really planned to go and get him braces, but as time passed, I forgot all about it until he’s now 15 years old and he told me about his teeth problem. He reportedly was teased by his peers about his teeth. They even call him crooked Jeff and it’s not good for his self-esteem. Not like Joe who doesn’t really care for his looks, Jeff is exactly the opposite of him as he always checks his image on a mirror. He’s even vainer than me. I asked him if he knows people who has or had braces, then maybe he can ask them for a referral of an excellent orthodontist to treat him. I also planned on asking people, especially my patients if they know good orthodontists in the area.

Jeff’s best friend, Pat told him that he used to have braces before they moved in here at Columbia. He shared that it took him a year to get cured but it was really painful because the doctor moves his teeth gradually depending on the condition. He remembered that he used to take tooth pain relief on a syrup form to take the edge off, like the ones mention at Even though Jeff learned that it will be hard wearing braces, he still wants to get a treatment so he’ll look better.

On the other hand, I talked to some of my patients and they told me about a good orthodontist in our area. Her name is Dr. Sarah McCann and they told me that she’s very good with interacting with kids and her practice is thriving because she’s an excellent doctor. I got her number and will call her after work. Once I got home, I told my son Jeff about it and he was so stoked with my news. I called the doctor and scheduled my son for a Sunday next week.

Sunday came as Jeff was accompanied by a bit of fear because he researched about braces and read that he needs to undergo a number of tooth extractions for the braces to have space to work on. We met Dr. McCann and she first examined his tooth if he really needed braces. She stated that he really needs it because in a few years, his wisdom tooth will grow and there are no spaces for it then it will just push the other teeth thus making more crooked teeth. She carefully explained to Jeff the process of putting braces and that gave him a bit of peace of mind, since what he really was afraid of was the injections before the tooth extraction. He was really afraid of needles even as a child. She added that she needs to make a mold of his teeth and then she’ll put spacers for braces to have a space for the molar bands that will be placed next week. Before we go, she also reminded us to get a panoramic view of his teeth’s x-ray to be submitted next week because she will use it as a guide on how to properly treat his case.

Uncommon Creativity

It is a little bit funny the things we use around the house. It’s a little bit weird but it is totally fun and makes for great conversational pieces. What am I talking about? Well it’s really hard to say, or might I say very hard to enumerate them all, as everything seems out of place in our household, in a good way that is.

One good example of that is the use of the best travel tripod that I have bought just recently for our vacation last year, which now apparently serves as a beautiful candle holder in my Reiki area in our house. It’s not ruined or anything as the candles are carefully placed in a glass jar before mounting it on the tripod.

It is my idea by the way. I thought of why not use it for something productive and not just store it someplace only to be forgotten. Its use is iffy at the moment as my husband abandoned his quest to become the best photographer this side of the globe. I don’t know why, he just fell out of love with it or something.

Having two curious and hormonally challenged teenage boys doesn’t help either. Imagine the various projects created by them which we use around the house, which I promise them that we will, really borders on the weird to put it mildly.

Can you imagine the best pack n play contraption which they have used when they were little, which also a while ago rested serenely in our attic, abruptly awakened and put into use as a stand for a Ping-Pong table? I know it’s a bit of a stretch but they are really capable of such things.

We have chandelier soda bottles, trampoline beds, tree stump stools, rock garden installations, and many more things that will baffle you no end, all thanks to them. Bizarre is a nice word to describe some of the things they make, but if you look at them closely, you might find them very beautiful in an eclectic kind of way.

Well I am not really complaining as some of the pieces do complement each other and exudes a feel that you are in an artist enclave of some sort. I am expecting greatness from their works while at the same time preparing for the worst, as you never know what each day brings.

I am very happy that they are this way as I encourage individuality and freedom of expression with them since they were young. It’s nice to see them always creating things that are out of the ordinary and are never afraid to challenge what is normal.

I know that they will make very good artists when they grow up but I never say it to them, as saying it somehow confines them to that future. I want them to find out what they truly want to be through their own ways and I’m just here to guide them and answer their questions. I really love these kids, weird creations or not.

Danger Signs on First Trimester of Pregnancy

When I was pregnant with my boys, I can still remember how extra careful I was especially during the first trimester because I have heard about women who have experienced miscarriages, pre-term labor and other complications during this three-month period. Some of them were not able to put extra attention to their health because they were not even aware that they were already pregnant and would only ask their doctor “how many weeks am I” after experiencing the first signs of complication.

The key to a healthy pregnancy is to keep yourself in your best health whenever possible. There are high-risk women who are wise enough because they closely monitor their pregnancy with the help of an implantation calculator. They start to closely monitor their pregnancy as soon as signs of implantation are observed, to avoid any problem associated with their condition. It is said that to maintain a healthy pregnancy, proper diet and exercise are very important. Aside from that, choosing natural healing and remedies for any health condition during this period is also the best option, as medications normally have serious side effects on the unborn baby.

However, despite extra care, some women may still experience pregnancy complications. It is important to know their signs so that you would immediately take the necessary steps:

1. Vaginal bleeding

If you know you are pregnant and you are experiencing heavy vaginal bleeding, it could be a sign of an ectopic pregnancy or miscarriage. If the bleeding comes with cramping just like period cramps, it is a sign of possible miscarriage. But if the bleeding comes with sharp pains in the lower abdomen, it could be a case of ectopic pregnancy.

2. Too much nausea and vomiting

Nausea and vomiting are just normal especially during the first trimester. However, if they get too much like they already are interfering with your normal activities and you think that you are vomiting more than what you have taken in, then you are in serious danger of dehydration which may also lead to a miscarriage.

3. High fever

High fever of 38 degrees Celsius or more during pregnancy could be a sign of an infection which may cause congenital defects to unborn babies like deafness. This is especially true if the fever comes with rashes and joint pains.

4. Pain during urination

If you are experiencing pain or a burning sensation during urination, it could be a sign of urinary tract or bladder infection. If left untreated, it could lead to serious pregnancy complications including pre-term labor and pre-term birth.

5. Flare-ups of existing medication conditions

If you have pre-existing medical conditions such as diabetes, thyroid disease, asthma, lupus and high blood pressure and you notice sudden flare-ups or changes in your condition while pregnant, consult your doctor immediately. Sudden flare-ups mean that your underlying condition is not well-controlled and it could have some serious consequences on you and your baby’s health.

In any of the above conditions, your best option is to talk to your doctor as soon as possible. Immediate action is necessary to ensure your safety and that of your baby.

Up Close: Diarrhea in Children and Adults

Have you ever experienced having days when you have to sit on the toilet bowl more frequently because of abdominal pain and loose watery stool? Yes, I’m talking about diarrhea. I suffered from diarrhea recently, and it is not something you should take lightly.

Diarrhea is generally not a serious health problem as it normally goes away after a day or two, even without taking any special medication. What many people do not know is that diarrhea may also pose serious health risks such as dehydration if it goes on for several days and left untreated. Diarrhea during pregnancy is a dangerous thing if the condition persists for several days as it could lead to dehydration and eventually, miscarriage. Diarrhea in toddlers and infants also need special attention because severe diarrhea even for a day may immediately result in dehydration which is a common cause of death among small children. I have also once encountered a Reiki patient who suffered from diarrhea as a symptom of an intestinal disease.

People of various age groups may suffer from diarrhea at an average of about four times a year. There are many reasons why a person or a child can have diarrhea:

  • Bacterial infections. Bacteria such as E. coli, salmonella, shigella and campylobacter which are present in contaminated food and water are one of the common causes of diarrhea in both adults and children.
  • Food intolerances. Some people cannot tolerate certain foods such as lactose in milk. If they take in these foods even in small amounts, it may result to diarrhea.
  • Functional bowel disorders. Disorders involving abnormal functioning of the intestines such as irritable bowel syndrome may also cause a person to suffer from diarrhea.
  • Intestinal diseases. Diarrhea may also be a symptom of celiac and inflammatory bowel diseases.
  • Parasites. Parasites in the digestive system especially among children may also cause diarrhea. Parasites such as crystoporidium and Giardia lamblia can get inside the body through contaminated food and water.
  • Reaction to certain medications. Some antibiotics, antacids and blood pressure medications may also cause diarrhea as a side effect.
  • Viral infections. Viral infection such as rotavirus, cytomegalovirus, Norwalk virus, viral hepatitis and herpes simplex virus are also noted to cause diarrhea as one of their symptoms.

Not all cases of diarrhea need medical attention. However, if you have the following symptoms, you should see your doctor immediately:

  • Black stools or stools with pus or blood
  • Fever with a temperature of 101.4 degrees Fahrenheit or higher
  • No signs of improvement after 24 hours
  • Noticeable signs of dehydration

  • Diarrhea which persists for three days or more
  • Diarrhea associated with severe abdominal pain
  • Fever with a temperature of over 102 degrees Fahrenheit
  • Black or tarry stools or presence of blood or pus in the stools
  • Noticeable signs of dehydration

Generally, re-hydration or drinking more fluid to prevent dehydration is the only necessary treatment for diarrhea. In some cases, certain medicines to stop diarrhea may also be prescribed. But this treatment is not recommended if the cause of the problem is bacterial or having a parasite in the intestine. If the diarrhea is caused by a more serious condition, your doctor may need to perform a series of tests for proper diagnosis and treatment. Once the underlying condition is treated, the problem of diarrhea normally just goes away on its own.

5 Common Reasons of Hip Pain

The hip joint is considered as the largest joint of the body. It supports the weight of the body while allowing it to perform a wide range of motion. With its crucial functions, it is also prone to a wide range of conditions that often result to hip pain. In my Reiki practice, I observe that a number of my patients have suffered from hip pain because of various conditions. One of the most common complaints I hear among others is hip flexor pain. Some of the conditions that brought the pain are really serious and require medical attention.

1. Labral Tear

The labrum is a cartilage surrounding the ball and socket joints in the hip and in the shoulder. This cartilage is very vital for the stability of the joint as well as for its flexibility and motion. Having a torn labrum hip is a common condition especially among athletes. It normally causes pain and discomfort even while standing up. With recent developments in arthroscopic techniques, there has been an increasing awareness about this condition. While minor tears can be simply treated with rest, more serious cases are now effectively managed surgically.

2. Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is a condition that is normally caused by the degeneration of the cartilage in the hip joint. One of the main reasons for degeneration is cellular changes. When the cartilage becomes brittle, some of the pieces may split and break away, leading to inflammation. Eventually, the cartilage may no longer be able to provide cushion for the bones. Sadly, there is no cure for osteoarthritis. But its symptoms can be cured by doing regular exercise to strengthen the muscle and by weight loss if the patient is overweight.

3. Rheumatoid arthritis

A person with rheumatoid arthritis suffers from an inflammation in the synovial joints found in the shoulder, elbows, hands, neck, wrists, knees, feet, ankles and hips. Aside from the pain, its symptoms also include joint stiffness which normally occurs in the morning. There is no cure for this condition but certain forms of treatments to alleviate the symptoms are available including medications, physical therapy and surgery.

4. Developmental dysplasia of the hip

Developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) is a congenital condition, which means that a baby is born with a dislocated hip joint or with a hip joint that is prone to dislocation. This is common among babies who are born with breech feet or those with a family history of spina bifida. More than 90 percent of infants born with this condition are successfully treated before reaching adulthood. For adults with hip dysplasia, treatment method more often include lifestyle changes, weight loss, taking medications to alleviate the pain, and surgery.

5. Irritable hip syndrome

Also known as toxic synovitis, irritable hip syndrome is a non-permanent form of arthritis. It normally affects children who are in their prepubescent stage. Aside from hip pain, its other notable symptoms include limping, fever and knee pain. In most cases, the symptom will just go away after about two weeks.

Thankfully, I have not yet experienced serious pain in my hip. But if any of you have this problem, it would be good to see your doctor immediately for proper diagnosis as the pain can be a symptom of several hip conditions that may require a specific treatment.

Advantages of Poodle Mixes as Pets

Dogs are considered to be one of the most popular pets in many households. I admit that I also love dogs. Many of my Reiki clients also love dogs. With a wide variety of dog breeds to choose from, it can sometimes be a daunting task especially for first-time dog owners to decide on the breed that is more suitable for them.

One particular breed that is an all-time favorite is the poodle. However, this breed has some traits that many dog owners had only wished were improved. That is where poodle mixes or crossing poodles with other breeds comes up with more superior traits. Comparing these mixes with other breeds, their advantages are noticeable.

1. More robust. One of the advantages of crossing poodles with other breeds is that they generally produce a more robust and healthy offspring as crossing reduces the likelihood of genetic diseases.

2. More intelligent. Poodle crosses or mixes are among the most intelligent dogs you can have. This should not come as a surprise because Poodles are also considered to be one of the most intelligent dog breeds, and their offspring tend to inherit this attribute.

3. Low Shedder. If your dog is a shedder, you will be picking them up frequently after it sheds all over your home during shedding season. Poodle crosses are low shedders compared to other breeds and mixes since poodle mixes generally don’t have a fine undercoat.

4. Hypo-allergenic fur. One of the biggest advantages of poodle crosses is that they have a hypo-allergenic fur. This makes them an ideal pet for people who have allergies since most allergy sufferers are able to tolerate them.

5. Moderate personality. If you think that you cannot match the vigor of high-energy dogs but would like a pet that is also a bit active and playful, choose any one of the poodle crosses.

6. Available in different sizes. Depending on the other parent, you can find poodle crosses in toy, miniature and standard sizes. There surely is a right size for any exacting owner.

7. Possesses many other likeable traits. Poodle crosses are not only intelligent but they are also loyal, sociable, friendly, easy to care and maintain, and easy to house-train.

If these advantages have already convinced you to own a poodle mix, you may want to consider the following popular poodle crosses:

  • Bichon poodle – Bichon Frise and Poodle mix
  • Cockapoo – Cocker Spaniel and Poodle mix
  • Labradoodle – Labrador Retriever and Poodle mix
  • Maltipoo – Maltese and Poodle mix
  • Peekapoo – Pekingese and Poodle mix
  • Yorkie Poo – Yorkshire Terrier and Poodle mix
  • Shihpoo – Shih Tzu and Poodle mix
  • Goldendoodle – Golden Retriever and Poodle mix
  • Pomapoo – Pomeranian and Poodle mix
  • Chipoo – Chihuahua and Poodle mix

Have I convinced you to get a poodle mix? While it is your personal choice on which type of dog to have, consider the advantages listed above. Of course, these advantages may not be true for all poodle crosses. Finally, if you like to have a dog with a good personality, you should really take time to train your pet from the very start.

Introduction to Reiki

People mainly use Reiki to strengthen and help them cope with their pain and fatigue. I’ve been practicing Reiki for 10 years now and it’s really a delight and a passion of mine to help other people to activate the natural healing processes of their body and restore their physical and emotional well being. To further enhance reiki energy, it is suggested to eat healthier foods like low carb vegetables, low carb fruits and less red meat or none at all, more about these type of food can be found at I’ve always tried to eat healthier but temptations arise from time to time.

I have many patients suffering from physical pains like back aches who I see every week. They’ve been my patients for more than 5 years and we have very good relationship. I have a favourite patient named Mr. Mobley. He is already 75 years of age and he is suffering from scoliosis. He used to suffer from chronic back pains and was searching for an alternative cure since he was so sick of taking pill after pill after pill and not really getting the results that he wants since the pills that he takes just wanes off its effect when it goes out of his body in 5 to 8 hours. He simply wanted a solution that may enable him to function more without any use of chemically enhanced drugs.

I’ve known Mr. Mobley through a good friend of mine, Tina. Tina works for him as his Quality Control supervisor because she’s excellent with handling people and has keen attention to detail. She never misses a thing whenever she is on her zone. Mr. Mobley owns a thriving Landscaping business here in South Carolina. Mr. Mobley wore a dark blue, newspaperboy cap with a matching dark brown coat which sports a lighter shade of brown for his tie. He has this way of walking reminiscent of those 70s people dragging their feet into the ground when walking. Tina accompanied him here in my house to inquire about Reiki and the help that it can give him. He took off his cap and coat and shook my hand politely as he introduced himself. I didn’t want him to have the usual sales pitch about reiki so I introduced him it to him by letting him experience it firsthand, to decide whether he wants the reiki processes or not. After a good 5 minutes of treatment, he was so impressed with how relaxed he was after just a short span of time. He thought that maybe, the hour of treatment can do wonders for his back. He gladly booked me for next week. I told him if he wants me to go to his home, it’s also okay since it’s really how my business is done.

Meeting and treating him every week then turned into twice to thrice a week dates as he requested. Now, I don’t just treat him as a client but also a friend. He also recommended me to a number of his friends who also experiencing the pain that he also suffered.

Drowning Without Water

natural antihistamine

My allergic rhinitis has been acting up again for days. I don’t really feel like taking prescriptions from a doctor so to treat it, I just take a natural antihistamine like chamomile, which also helps with insomnia and has the capability to relax the nervous system. I just boil it to make a tea and then after a few minutes, my hay fever would calm down. I hope my condition won’t worsen as I plan on visiting Mr. Nelson again this coming week as I don’t want him infected with my sneezing. I was going to keep my Sunday just for Mr. Nelson but a regular patient of mine, Mrs. Parker begged me to open a slot for her so I was really torn. I thought of making both ends meet as I’ll schedule my patient early in the morning and I’ll visit Mr. Nelson afternoon. While I was treating Mrs. Parker, my phone kept vibrating as someone was calling me, but as a professional, I can’t answer calls while treating patients. After two and a half hours, my session with Mrs. Parker already ended and I now had a time to check my phone.

It seems that Mr. Nelson called me as he was so excited to see me. I called him back, but no one was answering. I tried again, but it wasn’t Mr. Nelson’s voice who talked. I looked for Mr. Nelson but he told me that he can’t answer his phone because he is being treated by doctors. I told myself that it’s his grandchild that I’m talking to. I was so shocked with what I learned. He told me that he was the one who called earlier to tell me that they weren’t in their home because his grandpa was rushed to the hospital due to fluid in lungs. I was so worried and I asked him what hospital and room number where his grandpa is staying. He told me that he was brought to Lexington Medical Center located at 7035 St Andrews Rd and the room number is 403.

I thanked him as I rushed to get to the hospital. I had to endure hour long traffic because of a car and truck accident nearby the hospital. I parked my car and walked towards the concierge to ask where room 403 is. She delightedly pointed me in the right direction and was there in minutes. I knocked on the door and saw Mr. and Mrs. Nelson and their grandchild.   Mrs. Nelson gave me a pair of disposable gloves and a mask to wear. They were so thankful that I care especially Mr. Nelson. They shared that they still didn’t know it his neutropenia has something to do with what happened and they are still cautious about it. His grandchild told me that Mr. Nelson had a hard time breathing earlier as he was like drowning in the ocean that’s why he was rushed to the hospital. They have yet to wait for the results of the test and he has to be confined in a couple of days for observation.

Liver: Function and Diseases

During my longtime practice of Reiki, I have encountered a number of clients battling various types of liver diseases and I thought it would be good to let us understand more about this vital organ in our body.

The liver is considered to be the largest glandular organ in our body, with numerous vital functions to help keep the body clean of toxins and other harmful substances. In some aspects, the liver supports most of the organs in the body. Below are some facts about this vital organ:

  • The liver produces bile, which is necessary for digesting fats
  • It purifies the blood to remove toxins and harmful substances such as drugs and alcohol
  • It stores iron, certain vitamins and simple sugars
  • It breaks down insulin, hemoglobin and other hormones
  • It performs an important role in metabolism
  • It helps the body get rid of old red blood cells by destroying them

Because of these many important functions, it is important to maintain a healthy liver. However, with an unhealthy lifestyle, the liver can be subjected to diseases such as fatty liver diseases which are commonly caused by obesity, hepatitis infection, cirrhosis of the liver and cancer. Cirrhosis is an irreversible serious condition which causes the liver to not function properly. It occurs when the liver develops too much scars that have already hardened as a result of alcohol abuse and hepatitis infection. On the other hand, most cases of liver cancer do not originate in the liver. Instead, they commonly come from other parts of the body that have spread to the liver via the bloodstream.

Both chronic and acute liver diseases interfere with the normal functioning of this organ, thereby causing several symptoms. If you have experienced having pain on top of foot, the liver pain associated with most liver diseases may be more than that. However, because of the hefty reserve capacity of the liver, it normally takes significant damage to the organ before symptoms become noticeable. Aside from the pain, other symptoms include:

  • Jaundice – When a person starts to have yellow skin, it could be a sign of jaundice which may indicate that the liver is no longer properly metabolizing or secreting bilirubin, a yellow pigment in bile.
  • Bleeding and bruising – Another sign of a serious liver disease is when the liver is no longer able to produce enough blood-clotting proteins, causing the person to easily bleed or bruise.
  • Swelling of the legs – Also known as edema, this symptom may occur when the liver is no longer able to produce enough serum albumin.
  • Fatigue – A person who is easily tired for no reason could have a liver problem, caused by the organ’s inability to perform its metabolic functions.

Any problem affecting the liver needs immediate medical attention. More often, effective cure for liver diseases lies with early detection and treatment. If you notice having any of the symptoms above, see your doctor immediately.

A healthy lifestyle promotes a healthy liver. To avoid liver problems, take care of your liver by being conscious about your diet and avoiding alcohol abuse.

Tale of my Two Sons

I’m curious that Joe still hasn’t got a tattoo since normally, band members have one too many. He is a guitarist of a fusion rock band who plays their gigs in local bars around the Columbia area. They’ve been trying to break into mainstream by passing out their recordings to record companies but I think, their genre is meant to be underground. The masses just want something easy listening tunes like pop music on the radios..

One morning as I was preparing my things for work, Joe came to me and asked if he can have a tattoo. I wasn’t surprised that he wants a tattoo but it was a surprise for me that he would ask her mother. I was glad about it and told him that he is old enough to decide for himself. I added that if ever he gets one, he makes sure that his tattoo artist is good as some artists make skin tear on their clients. He shared that his band mate is a great tattoo artist as he won some tattoo competitions around the country. He told me that if he was going to get a tattoo, it’s going to me a picture of me on his biceps. He was so happy for my advice and that I didn’t judge him right away. He added that he is still thinking about it. He also thanked me for being the best mom ever. I was so teary eyed when he said that because he wasn’t really vocal about those kinds of things.

A minute later, Jeff came near me then whispered something. I didn’t hear him so I asked him to say it out loud. He told me that he has pimples under the skin and it has been bothering him for a month. He didn’t know that Joe was eavesdropping and he teased his brother while laughing loudly. I told Joe to cut it out and he said he’s off to school. Meanwhile, I told Jeff that if he wants me to accompany him to the dermatologist, we can do it on a Sunday since that’s my day off. I advised him to not prick them as not to have them infected and just let the professionals do it for him. I asked him where his pimples are because his face is smooth and clear. He showed me his back and there a lot of lesions and pimples. I asked him when did he prick them and he was surprised that I know. I added that those lesions appeared because he pricked them bad.

Sunday came as I accompany my son Jeff to the clinic. He was so timid when asked about his condition. The doctor told him that he shouldn’t be ashamed of it because there are many men who come to the clinic with the same condition. He showed her his back and was told that it’s just easy to treat it. She’ll just inject him with cortisone shots and it will shrink for under 24 hours. She also advised my son that he can use to apply hot and cold compress on the area and it will draw out the pus and then he can apply salicylic acid on it.

Bill and my Kids

I was taking a good, soothing, long hour hot bath as I saw a bruise on my left thigh. I wasn’t aware that I developed such a thing because I haven’t had any accidents or bumps that I know of. I just ignored my unexplained bruising and gone to my usual routine attending to clients and taking care of my kids. My two boys reminded me that they have a game this coming Friday and I would love to see them play as the neighbors told me that they’re good in playing basketball. I haven’t had the chance to see them play because I was too involved with my work.

I called their uncle Bill, my older brother, to invite him and see my boys play. He was the man responsible in making my kids addicted with basketball. He used to play in College and almost got drafted in the NBA if not for his ACL injury. He also plays the point-guard position like my son Steve. I remember that he used to make those fancy no look passes as he makes his defenders clueless on what he’s going to do next. He used to pattern his game after his most favorite player, John Stockton of the Utah Jazz. He was so stoked when he met him in person as he looked like a little boy asking for his idol’s autograph. He hasn’t played competitive basketball since then but spends his time now more on coaching HS kids.

Bill taught my kids the fundamentals of basketball like proper ball handling, proper passing, and proper form to shoot, lateral movements, etc. He also taught them to study and assess the players that they play against, to know their weaknesses and think of something on how to beat them. He made my kids competitive and always play to play, but at the same time, also imparted the importance of sportsmanship. Steve plays the point-guard position as he also has excellent ball handling and passing skills like his uncle, while Chris on other hand, plays the shooting guard or sometimes he’s seen in the wings because he’s such a very versatile player. He can shoot consistent three’s and can also defend people driving to the basket.   The only weakness that I know of Chris is that he always needs to be setup with a pick or two. He’s a shooter and not a scorer because scorers can always create their own shots. Meanwhile, Steve is so unselfish that he doesn’t always shoot the ball if he’s open. He’s a real pass first point-guard but Bill told me he has to shot if he’s open. You don’t want teams always doubling off him because he doesn’t shoot the ball. It could be a major weakness for his game because teams can always take advantage of that. I think their Uncle Bill can help them more rounded to be well rounded players. I just hope Bill still has time to teach them because he’s always busy with coaching.

Our Poor Little Blithe

My two boys recently owned a very healthy and cuddly Pomsky named Blithe and they are so fond of him. Blithe is so fun to watch as he is active, playful, agile, smart and intelligent. The boys take turns in bathing him every day. They even made him a big doghouse from scratch out in our backyard. I love it that my boys are handy and hardworking. They also try to train him on basic tricks such as sit, stand, heel, down and stay and so far, they’re doing great. They also had him de-wormed and vaccinated by Dr. Wilson, the veterinarian. My boys today have plenty of time to care for him since it’s still summer vacation, but I wonder what will happen when already have school.

Summer ended and my kids were busy with school, but they promised to still find time to tend to Blithe but I have hardly ever seen them playing with the dog. Mostly when they weren’t out with friends, they just play video games inside the house. One time I even asked them if they already fed him because he looked pale and hungry. Jeff and Joe thought that one of them already fed him so both ran outside to feed the poor dog. I hate it when my kids turn lazy.

One night as I just came home from work, I heard Blithe making funny noises. I rushed to change my clothes and then went on to our backyard to see him. He looked sad and he has blood dripping off his ears. I thought he had mites because he looked like he has scratched them so hard as he had nasty cuts on his ears. Our poor baby was neglected by my two lazy boys. I called them out to the yard and showed them what happened to the dog. The two of them were really sorry about it and promised that they will take care of him again. I suggested that they take him to Dr. Wilson, our neighborhood friendly veterinarian at the community center nearby. We observed the dog’s behavior as it still scratches his ears even though they were bleeding. I told my boys to also clean his wounds and cover them up with bandages because we don’t want Blithe’s condition to worsen. It’s nice to see my boys taking care of him again like they used to.

My boys woke up early on a weekend which was very unusual. The two planned on having Blithe checked by Dr. Wilson as they were so guilty that something happened to their beloved pet because of their laziness. The doctor examined Blithe’s condition and he told the boys that Blithe has dog ear infection. The doctor stated that the infection is just beginning to build up so they’re fortunate to have found it before it can impair the dog’s hearing. He also told them that dog infections normally are itchy, that’s why the dog had so much cuts on his ears. He recommended cutting his nails so it won’t cut him as much with longer nails. He added to bathe him at least three times a week to ensure that he is always clean. He also prescribe antibiotics and anti-fungals for his ears and to clean his wounds regularly to not risk infection.
